How to Choose a Sunscreen in the UAE (Without the Confusion)
Sunscreen is the single most effective anti-ageing product available, and the one most people use wrongly. The labelling does not help. Here is what the numbers mean and how to choose one you will genuinely wear.
SPF is only half the label
SPF measures protection against UVB — the rays that burn. It says nothing about UVA, the rays that penetrate deeper, drive pigmentation and photo-ageing, and pass through window glass. In the Gulf, where you are exposed year-round and often through car and office windows, UVA protection matters just as much.
Look for one of these alongside the SPF number:
- PA+++ or PA++++ — the Asian system. More plus signs, more UVA protection.
- “Broad spectrum” — the American term.
- UVA in a circle — the European mark.
An SPF 50 with no UVA marking is doing half a job.
Does SPF 50 beat SPF 30 by much?
Less than the numbers suggest. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB, SPF 50 about 98%. The real-world difference is not the extra 1% — it is that almost nobody applies enough. Most people use a quarter to a half of the tested amount, which drops the actual protection dramatically. Starting from SPF 50 gives you more room for that error.
How much is enough? Roughly two finger-lengths of product squeezed onto your index and middle fingers covers the face and neck. It will feel like too much the first time. It is not.
Mineral or chemical?
| Mineral | Chemical | |
|---|---|---|
| Filters | Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide | Avobenzone, octinoxate, Tinosorb and others |
| Feel | Thicker, can leave a white cast | Lighter, absorbs invisibly |
| Suits | Sensitive and reactive skin | Deeper skin tones, daily wear under makeup |
| Works | Immediately on application | Give it 15–20 minutes |
Neither is better in the abstract. Sensitive or rosacea-prone skin usually gets on better with mineral. If white cast is your objection — and for medium and deep skin tones it often is — a modern chemical or hybrid formula solves it.
Matching the texture to your skin
- Oily or acne-prone — a fluid, gel or “dry touch” formula labelled non-comedogenic. Many Korean and Japanese sunscreens are excellent here.
- Dry — a cream or lotion with added hydration, so it doubles as your moisturiser.
- Sensitive — mineral, fragrance-free, short ingredient list.
- Under makeup — a light fluid that sets rather than staying tacky.
- Deeper skin tones — chemical or tinted formulas avoid the grey cast that untinted zinc leaves.
Reapplication, honestly
The rule is every two hours outdoors. If you are in an office all day and applied properly in the morning, you do not need to re-lather at your desk — but you do if you have been outside, swimming, sweating, or have wiped your face.
For reapplying over makeup, a sunscreen stick or a powder SPF is far more practical than trying to layer cream over foundation. It is not as thorough, but the sunscreen you actually reapply beats the one you do not.
Things that quietly ruin sunscreen
- Leaving it in the car. A closed car in a Dubai summer easily passes 60°C. Heat degrades UV filters and the product may no longer deliver the protection on the label.
- Using last summer’s bottle. Check the period-after-opening symbol. An opened sunscreen from two seasons ago should be replaced.
- Missing the edges. Ears, hairline, sides of the neck, the back of the hands on the steering wheel. Pigmentation shows up in exactly these places.
- Relying on the SPF in your foundation. You would need far more foundation than anyone wears for that number to mean anything.
The one that matters most
The best sunscreen is the one whose texture you like enough to use daily without thinking about it. A perfect SPF 50 PA++++ that sits unopened because it feels greasy protects nothing.
